Brandon
Ponder,
Texas
2008 Opening morning in Brady, Texas, Brandon set out on his 1st hunt in 15 years. His excitement proved a handicap to the imperative patient demeanor necessary for this hunt. Necessary because although Brady is a 2 buck county, Bratton Ranch this year is limiting their hunters to 1 buck per gun. After passing up several nice bucks, Brandon took this approx. 20in. 10point buck. He was not disappointed with his decision and was then afforded the remaining season to concentrate on teaching his daughters Olivia (11years) and Vivian (10years) the ropes of hunting.

What a season!!! When Vivian looks back at her 1st kill, she can remember not only the unseasonably warm weather, or her near perfect shot which dropped her doe on the spot, but she will also remember that although neither she nor her sister (her senior by a year), had ever shot at an animal before, Olivia allowed Vivian to take the first shot. What a sister! And what a shot! Our whole camp drank to Viv’s success (not that we needed a reason) and participated in the ritual face painting. This is what it’s all about…bringing up a new generation of hunters.

What an experience…One Olivia will not soon forget. Many hunters remember the circumstances surrounding their first kill. Their nearly frost-bit fingers and toes, or the stillness of the morning, maybe holding your breath not to expose yourself, perhaps even the reservation or personal battle with your ability to take the animal with the patient sure shot or the “I think I can shot”. At any rate, Olivia was excited and with her first shot ever, she dropped this doe in place. Congratulations Olivia!!!
